FAQs

1. Can I collect from the farm directly?

Of course! We have many customers who live locally and come to the farm to collect their flour. As we are a working farm, flour collection is by appointment only. Just send us an email at orders@mungoswells.co.uk and let us know what you’re looking for, and we’ll get this organised for you.

2. Is your flour fortified?

As a small business, we are exempt from fortification (calcium, iron, niacin, thiamin, etc) as we do not produce over 500-tons of flour per year. Our flours are therefore completely additive-free, offering a more natural alternative to many commercial flours. The only thing we ever add is the baking powder used to make our self-raising flour. For our organic self-raising flour, we can’t use conventional baking powder, so the organic authorities approve the use of sodium bicarbonate and mono calcium phosphate instead. These can’t be sourced organically, but their use is permitted as there’s no organic alternative. If our production increases and fortification becomes legally required in the future, we’ll be sure to keep everyone informed.

3. Do you sell gluten-free flour?

We do not offer gluten-free flour. All our wheat is grown on our farm and milled on-site in our almost continuously operating mill. As a result, we are unable to accommodate the additional task of milling gluten-free grains. We are also committed to producing only what we can mill on-site as we believe strongly in keeping things local, so outsourcing this is sadly not an option for us.

That said, we have heard from a surprising number of ‘gluten-intolerant’ customers who can enjoy our flour without issue. We suspect this may be because some gluten-related sensitivities may actually stem from unnecessary additives or agrochemicals commonly found in conventional flours (and therefor breads). Of course, this varies from person to person, so we can’t guarantee the same experience for everyone, but it may be something to consider.

4. Do you offer mixed pallets?

We’re often asked whether we can supply mixed pallets, and the answer is yes. For wholesale customers looking to stock a variety of our flours, we’re more than happy to build a pallet to your requirements. Whether you’re after a mix of strong bread flours, wholemeal, spelt, or rye, just let us know what works best for your business and we’ll tailor the selection to suit. This option is ideal for businesses managing smaller storage capacity or seeking to trial a variety of flours.

5. Do you sell sacks of malted barley?

Yes we do. We sell sacks of both crushed and uncrushed malt (pale ale, lager, and wheat), and are available in 20kg sacks. These are not available on our website however so give us an email at orders@mungoswells.co.uk and we’ll get you sorted!
